Shoesmith School Partnership
Beulah Shoesmith Elementary School is just across Kenwood Park from St. Paul & the Redeemer. SPR and Shoesmith have done many projects together over the years to support the important learning and growth that happens there. The Chicago Public Schools budget does not allow for a robust arts program, so every Lent, we raise money for Shoesmith and recruit volunteers from SPR to help in a variety of ways. It is truly a cooperative partnership; Shoesmith students have collected canned goods for SPR’s food pantry.
Music
Funded fully by SPR, Shoesmith has contracted with the Uniting Voices of Chicago to run its choir program. The choir performs at SPR during Sunday worship at least once a year.
Garden
A grant written by one of our parishioners established a butterfly garden and raised beds for vegetables, herbs, flowers and strawberries. The garden space is used by the teachers for science, math, art and outdoor performances. The Shoesmith Green Team (an afterschool program) plants, harvests, weeds, and cleans, with our help.
Arts
SPR helps fund a variety of projects such as the mosaic project surrounding the entrance, and classroom projects led by SPR artists. In return, the children have provided art shows in our chapel.
